Jim Mellon, volunteer firefighterOne day in 1983, Jim Mellon, an experienced volunteer firefighter, found himself on the other side of the fire scene as he watched a rental property he owned go up in smoke and flames. From the ashes rose a new set of opportunities. Mellon, a general contractor, now faced the challenges of restoration work.

The entire house had to be gutted. Floor joists in the basement were replaced. The house needed to be rewired and re-windowed. A new kitchen and new bathroom had to be installed. Mellon did all of this work himself.

When it came to cleaning and deodorizing the home's smoke- and water-damaged contents, Mellon learned on the job, with guidance from a friend in the cleaning business. Four months later, his tenants were able to move back in.

Ever since that time, Mellon has continued his education in the field of disaster restoration. He fulfilled intensive educational requirements to become a Certified Restorer through the National Institute of Disaster Restoration (NIDR). Those who hold the designation pledge to continually meet the standards set by this organization, and to uphold its code of ethics.
