  • Brief History ▼

    Mellon Certified Restoration is a highly successful, full-service, privately owned company that specializes in the restoration of commercial and residential property damaged by fire, smoke, water, mold, wind, vandalism and other perils. By offering both emergency services and repairs, Mellon Certified Restoration is committed to providing property owners with a single-source solution to their loss.


    As the company’s President and Owner, Jim Mellon’s interest in restoration began in 1982. As a small general contractor and a Philadelphia area firefighter, he personally experienced a major property fire loss and quickly discovered that special skills, equipment and education were required to correctly restore his property.


    This was the spark that ignited a new venture! Combining the need for this specialized service with his personal passion to help people in need, Jim fulfilled the rigorous educational requirements of the National Institute of Disaster Restoration (NIDR), earning the prestigious Certified Restorer (CR) designation.


    As our reputation for service, skill, and responsiveness grew, so did the company and Jim Mellon General Contracting evolved into the industry leader Mellon Certified Restoration.

    The Restoration Industry Association Member: The Restoration Industry Association (formerly ASCR) is the oldest and largest non-profit, professional trade association dedicated to providing industry leadership, supporting science, and promoting best practices in the cleaning and restoration industry.


    Representing over 20,000 cleaning and restoration professionals from 1,200 firms, specializing in textiles, environmental issues, and restoration, RIA provides credibility, education and business improvement events to maximize industry exposure and to advance knowledge in the cleaning and restoration industry. With an extensive network of professionals working towards similar goals, RIA has become a trusted resource of knowledge for those involved in cleaning and restoration.



    The Certified Restorer: The Certified Restorer® (CR) Certification Program focuses on damage repair and raising committed restorers to a higher level of professional ability.


    Education and study address both buildings and personal contents property. They are based on the structure and nature of materials, and the effects of various perils. Restoration theory addresses the mechanisms by which residue odors are removed. Toxic contamination, allergic response, water damage, contracts and insurance are also covered. The Certified Restorer Certification Program is widely recognized as the pre-eminent training program in damage repair and it is the Badge of Professional Excellence.




    IICRC: The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration was formed to serve as an independent, non-profit certification body to set and promote high standards and ethics and to advance communication and technical proficiency within the inspection, cleaning and restoration service industries.


    The Cleantrust approves independent schools and instructors to teach and administer IICRC certification programs. Currently, The Cleantrust has approximately 150 approved instructors for its 22 certification courses.


    The Cleantrust develops relationships between its registrants and other groups such as affiliated partners in carpet and upholstery manufacturing, and in the insurance industry. Consumers have assurance that when they hire The Cleantrust’s certified firms or technicians, they have hired experts who will provide reasonable assurance that work will be completed in accordance with the industry’s standard of care.



    BBB Accreditation: BBB Accreditation is an honor – and not every company is eligible. We are proud to be a member of the Better Business Bureau of Metro Washington DC and eastern Pennsylvania. Only businesses that meet their high standards are invited to join the BBB. Businesses meeting BBB standards are presented to local Boards of Directors (or designees) for review and acceptance as a BBB Accredited Business.     The National Association of the Remodeling Industry: The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) began in 1935 when President Roosevelt’s National Recovery Act established the beginnings of NERSICA (The North East Roofing, Siding and Insulation Contractors Association). Today, NARI has 58 chapters nationwide. In 2000, NARI moved its national headquarters from Alexandria, Virginia, to Des Plaines, Illinois, and as the Voice of the Remodeling Industry™, continues to prosper.


    NARI’s core purpose is to advance and promote the remodeling industry’s professionalism, product, and vital public purpose and educate its members. NARI members and their projects have been featured on Home & Garden Television and CNN and in the pages of The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Consumer Reports, US News & World Report, The New York Times and Chicago Tribune.     Certified Remodeler (CR): The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has established the Certified Remodeler (CR) designation to promote the highest standards of remodeling through the credentialing of remodeling professionals.


    The Certified Remodeler program reflects the current state of the industry and strives to be current with the existing Building Code (IRC and IBC), accepted business practices, and standard building practices.


    The purpose of the CR certification program is to:

    Establish the body of knowledge for Certified Remodelers

    Assess the level of knowledge demonstrated by Certified Remodelers in a valid and reliable manner

    Encourage professional growth in the field of remodeling

    Formally recognize individuals who meet the requirements set by the NARI Certification Board

    Serve the public by encouraging quality remodeling practices

    The NARI Certification Board, with assistance and advice from professionals in relevant fields, has developed this credential that recognizes an accepted level of expertise in the profession with the goal of improving professional standards in remodeling. Certification is achieved for those who have subscribed to rigorous procedures, tests and ethical standards.



    The EPA: The EPA requires individuals conducting lead-based paint activities (abatement, inspection, and risk assessment) in target housing and child-occupied facilities to be trained and certified. The trainers are accredited to ensure quality. Certified individuals must follow specific work practices ensuring that lead hazards are addressed.

    Recognizing the potential health impact of standard every day, chemical based disinfectants (quaternary ammonia, bleach and synthetic thymol), our company utilizes disinfectants & cleaners made from botanic extracts that are 99.99% effective at killing germs and inhibiting mold growth while being 100% safe for humans, animals and the environment.

Our on-site ultrasonic cleaning removes soot, mold and dirt more thoroughly, so that more items can be recovered. This system is also environment friendly as it requires no harsh chemicals to clean the damaged items.


    Infrared Technology

     We utilize ultra-compact, lightweight infrared cameras that offer a non-invasive means of monitoring and diagnosing moisture in buildings. These thermal imaging systems are non-contact devices that detect infrared energy (heat) and instantly perform temperature calculations to convert heat into an electronic signal that is processed into a thermal image on a video monitor. They provide immediate documentation of post-casualty cause and origin data, plumbing and building envelope water leakage, post-flood and fire water-damaged material assessment, roofing, and even rodent or pest discovery. There is also an additional benefit of cost savings by potentially reducing destructive testing or demolition.


    Trailer Mounted Desiccant Dehumidifier

    This equipment efficiently and aggressively dehumidifies water damaged or moisture laden residential and commercial structures. This technology provides a rapid reduction of moisture and is an ideal alternative to refrigerant dehumidifiers or small desiccant machines which may not be feasible or efficient for larger residential or commercial losses or when the availability of sufficient electrical power is limited.
